"FROM EVERLASTING TO EVERLASTING, YOU ARE GOD" - PSALM 90:2
In
order for the student of Bible prophecy to know the
plan of
God, he must understand the prophetic truth and various ways that God
deals with man as revealed through the dispensations of the Scripture. What is a dispensation?
The word comes from the Greek word, oikonomia,
and means administration, stewardship, managing of a household or
estate. The word occurs throughout the pages of the New
Testament, see for example: Lk.16:3; 1 Cor.9:17; Eph.1:10;
3:2;
Col.1:25; 1 Tim.1:4.
The term "dispensation" may be defined within the study of Holy Scripoture and God's eternal program as a probationary period in man's history when God test him according to a fixed standard of conduct or responsibilty, under which man is expected to perform (and remain true), see Gen.2:17; 4:1-15; 9:1-19; 12:1-9; Exod.19:8; 20:1-26; Isa.66:19-21; Zech.14:16-21; Rom.1:5; 15:26 and Rev.20:1-10. Note: As you study each of the various dispensations, watch for similarities or patterns in such things as the beginnings, God's progressive revelation of Himself, man's consistent pattern of failure (except in the seventh), and Satan's infleuence and tactics as he tries to frustrate the plan of God. As you study, try to pinpoint the "rules" God lays down for each dispensation. The better the student of prophecy understands the dispensational pattern, the greater hus understanding of prophetic truth will be.
